OWNED VR TRAINING PLATFORM FOR SAFETY TRAINING DELIVERY
VR Training Development / Safety Training Simulation / Assessment & Reporting Systems / 360° VR Training
OVERVIEW_
JB Hunter XR is the extended reality division of a national training organisation with more than 30 years of experience delivering industrial safety training across telecommunications, utilities and construction industries.
When Future Perfect Digital was engaged, JB Hunter XR already had four VR training modules in operation. These modules were being used in training centres and educational environments, but the underlying technology stack limited flexibility, reporting capability, commercial growth and long-term ownership.
Over a four-year engagement, Future Perfect Digital transformed a collection of VR training products into a scalable training platform with flexible delivery models, custom assessment workflows, client-owned reporting infrastructure and new commercial opportunities.
The resulting platform has been deployed nationally across training centres, enterprise training environments, TAFEs, colleges and schools, with selected international deployments.

THE CHALLENGE_
JB Hunter XR's core training suite included:
• CPR
• First Aid (Electrical Supply Industry)
• Pole Top Rescue
• Low Voltage Rescue
These training products were operational, but the surrounding platform created significant business and technical limitations.
Key challenges included:
• Dependence on a third-party reporting system controlled by a previous supplier
• Limited ability to modify reporting workflows or introduce new reporting features
• Ongoing operational costs associated with external platform dependencies
• Complex architecture that made updates difficult and time-consuming
• Limited flexibility to expand into new delivery models and training products
• Reduced visibility and control over learner assessment data
JB Hunter XR needed more than updated VR modules. They needed ownership of the platform, control over their data and the ability to evolve their training products without external constraints.
THE APPROACH_
Future Perfect Digital initially engaged through an upgrade of the CPR training module.
During the review process, it became clear that different modules required different strategies.
For the CPR module, a full rebuild in Unity established a cleaner and more maintainable foundation while modernising the experience for newer VR hardware.
For the remaining modules, Future Perfect Digital worked directly within the existing Unreal Engine environment, strategically improving architecture, performance, usability and maintainability without disrupting active training delivery.
This approach allowed JB Hunter XR to continue delivering training while progressively modernising the platform behind the scenes.
THE SOLUTION_
1. Modernised VR Training Experiences
Across all training products, Future Perfect Digital introduced a consistent training framework.
This included:
• Practice mode for self-guided learning
• Assessment mode for formal competency evaluation
• Chapter-based navigation and training progression
• Improved user flows and onboarding experiences
• Updated visual quality and performance optimisation
• Modernisation for contemporary VR headsets including Meta Quest devices
• Consistent interaction patterns across the training suite
Importantly, the introduction of practice-only experiences allowed learners to build familiarity independently before formal assessment, reducing the supervisory burden associated with trainer-led practice sessions.
2. Flexible Product Structure
The platform was redesigned to support multiple commercial models.
Rather than a single training product, JB Hunter XR could now offer:
• Assessment-only experiences
• Practice-only experiences
• Combined practice and assessment products
This created new ways to package, price and deploy training across different customer groups and learning environments.
Assessment-based products could be delivered on a per-learner basis, while practice-focused experiences could support subscription-based delivery models.
3. Client-Owned Reporting and Assessment Infrastructure
One of the most significant outcomes of the project was the replacement of a restrictive third-party reporting platform.
Future Perfect Digital designed and implemented a custom reporting and assessment system fully owned by JB Hunter XR.
The platform:
• Captures assessment and learner performance data directly from VR training experiences
• Provides detailed assessment analytics and competency breakdowns
• Supports trainer, administrator and client-level access controls
• Automates reporting workflows and notifications
• Delivers assessment results to relevant stakeholders automatically
• Enables custom reporting formats based on organisational requirements
• Eliminates reliance on external reporting vendors
The result was complete ownership of training data, assessment records and reporting workflows.
What had previously been a recurring operational cost became an internal asset that JB Hunter XR could control, evolve and commercialise.
4. New Training Formats
To expand the platform further, Future Perfect Digital designed and developed a new 360° VR Gas Detection training experience.
Unlike the existing modules, this training product was created entirely by Future Perfect Digital.
The experience combined on-site filming with interactive VR training design, creating a cost-effective pathway for developing realistic training scenarios without the expense of fully modelled environments.
IMPACT_
The project transformed JB Hunter XR from a collection of individual VR training products into an owned and extensible training platform.
Key outcomes included:
• National deployment across training centres, enterprise training environments, TAFEs, colleges and schools
• International deployment opportunities in selected markets
• Reduced reliance on trainer-led practice sessions through self-guided learning modes
• Improved learner access to assessment results and training records
• Improved reporting visibility for trainers, administrators and clients
• Elimination of third-party reporting platform dependency
• Significant reduction in ongoing reporting platform costs
• Greater flexibility to create new reporting workflows and assessment criteria
• Expanded commercial opportunities through multiple training product models
• Improved maintainability, performance and hardware compatibility across the platform
• Continued long-term partnership and platform evolution
The most significant outcome was not the modernisation of individual VR training modules.
It was the creation of an owned training ecosystem.
By controlling both the training experiences and the reporting infrastructure behind them, JB Hunter XR gained the ability to:
• Launch new training products faster
• Adapt assessment criteria to changing requirements
• Introduce new reporting capabilities without vendor approval
• Serve multiple customer types through different delivery models
• Retain ownership of training data and platform direction
The platform continues to evolve today, including support for new training initiatives.
